Though nose piercing is practiced throughout the world, it is most commonly associated with India. Typically, women in India who opt for the piercing will get the outside left nostril pierced. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the left nostril is associated with female reproductive organ, so a piercing at the site is supposed to ease child birth.
Nose piercings are also a symbol of social standing, and in the Hindu tradition, honors the goddess Parvati. Some women from Maharashtra wear large, ornate nose jewelry that covers a large portion of their face.
