My Grandmother’s Boxes
I grew up with my grandmother for most of my life. I loved every moment I spent with her. So, it goes without saying, that I was heartbroken when she passed away last year. My other relatives gave me one of the most important roles that I ever had to accomplish. It was to pack her things. I had to choose which ones were important and which can be given away or stocked in the storage room. It took me 4 days, 8 hours, and 45 minutes to pack away her entire life. It was deeply saddening but I was very thankful. If I didn’t do it, I wouldn’t have found her stack of wooden jewelry boxes so well-kept in a hidden drawer of her closet. There were quite a number of them and in different sizes and shapes. They were all gorgeous! I was hesitant to open them thinking I was invading my grandmother’s privacy. I was glad I did. In them, were the handmade little tokens that I have given her through the years. She kept them all. Going through those wooden jewelry boxes took all 2 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes of my packing. Time well spent, I think.
